How to fix what the health check found.
Four fixes, written by an operator. No tool to buy for any of them. Where Skorops helps, we say so.
Keep bookers on your own site
Every booking that leaves your domain pays 15 to 20 percent commission. A guest already on your site is the cheapest booking you will ever get.
- 1.Embed your booking engine on your domain (Cloudbeds, SiteMinder, Mews, Little Hotelier, Beds24 all offer an embed). A book button that opens another site loses roughly a third of mobile bookers.
- 2.Put the book button in the header on every page and above the fold on the homepage. One tap to the calendar, not three.
- 3.Give a direct-only perk and say so next to the rate: free breakfast, late checkout, a free locker, or 10 percent off. Rate parity with no perk hands the booking to the OTA.
- 4.Show the OTA price next to yours when you are cheaper. Guests compare anyway; do the comparison for them.
- 5.Collect the email at checkout and send a book-direct offer for the next trip. Past guests are the biggest direct channel you have.
Get into the Google map pack
Most guests searching "hostel in [city]" tap one of the three map results. Outside the pack you are invisible to them.
- 1.Claim and complete Google Business Profile: category, hours (including check-in hours), phone, website link, description with the neighbourhood and what you are known for.
- 2.Upload 10 current photos and add one a week: rooms, common areas, exterior, the team.
- 3.Reply to every review within 48 hours, good and bad. Replies are a ranking signal and a trust signal.
- 4.Ask every happy guest for a Google review at checkout: a QR code at reception and a line in the checkout message.
- 5.Keep name, address and phone identical on your site, Google, Tripadvisor and the OTAs. Mismatches cost rank.
- 6.Add LocalBusiness or Hostel structured data to your site so Google and AI answers can read your facts.
A faster mobile site
Above three seconds, most travellers on hostel wifi give up. Speed is also a ranking factor.
- 1.Compress every image: under 200 KB for hero shots, WebP or AVIF, sized to the slot. This alone fixes most slow hostel sites.
- 2.Lazy-load everything below the fold, including the booking widget until the guest scrolls to it.
- 3.Remove scripts you do not use: old chat widgets, duplicate analytics, social feeds.
- 4.Use your host's CDN and caching. On WordPress, a caching plugin and a lightweight theme.
- 5.Re-test on Google PageSpeed Insights (mobile) after each change. Target 70 or better.
Pricing and channel mix
Flat pricing sells your busiest nights at your quietest price, and an OTA-only mix pays commission on bookings you earned yourself.
- 1.Set a weekend and event uplift (10 to 25 percent) and review rates every week against the two hostels you lose guests to.
- 2.List on the OTAs that matter in your market (Hostelworld and Booking.com at minimum). They are the billboard; direct is the margin.
- 3.Track direct share monthly. Under 25 percent means the book-direct perk and the email list need work first.
- 4.Move repeat guests and groups to direct with a code they only get from you.
- 5.Use the leak estimate in your report as the monthly number to beat.
